Muscatel was made in the area and is sold in the United States. If you look up many of the chimneys have the large storks roosting in them. Their nest’s are 4-5 feet wide and you’ll see many of them throughout the Alentejo region. The pousada is wonderful and full of surprises. The first one was that it is built from a Moorish castle and that the interior is very modern. It is also sitting above a Roman ruin, which they have done over into a museum. So you have plenty to see right in the pousada itself. The restaurant is delicious. I had goat cheese baked in puff pastry sitting on top of a wonderful salad. The Alentejo region has many local wines that you can sample and tour. Make sure you do that because you will be pleasantly surprised at the great Portuguese wines available and exported to the United States.
